In 1985, Ken met the love of his life, Mary, at a three-year-old’s birthday party. He fell head over heels in love with her personality and her beauty. They married two years later and recently celebrated 36 years of marriage. Their life adventures involved raising Scott, traveling the world, and boating on Galveston Bay.
Ken served his country in the U.S. Army and was assigned active duty in Vietnam where he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star. Upon discharge by the Army, he earned a business degree at the University of Houston. He was employed by American General Mortgage Company, where he was a mortgage broker for many years. He continued his banking profession at Commonwealth Bank and Bank One as an auditor. In later years Ken and Scott started Steward National Financial Services and Texas Auto Solutions. He was also a member of the American Legion, the One Hundred Club and a Master Mason of the Jacques DeMolay Lodge.
Ken was particularly honored by his affiliation with, and service to, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where he served as a Lifetime Director. Ken joined the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1985 and served on several committees over the years such as Ticket Trailer, Resource Renewal and the International Committee. Through his philanthropy and support of the youth of Texas, Ken and Mary have been Grand Champion Buyers within the Lamb & Goat, School Art, Poultry and Swine committee auctions and are members of Silver Spur. Mary and Ken are also active sponsors of the Cherokee County Junior Livestock auction.
He was also proud to be a member of Houston Farm and Ranch Club, where he served as President as well as Chairman of the Board. Ken was also one of the original founders of Friends for Wishes, which benefits the Make a Wish Foundation. Through their generosity, Ken and Mary have granted several wishes.
He was an avid reader, gardener, pilot, woodworker, philanthropist, and a friend to all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Denman Hucherson, and his mother, Gladys Hucherson. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Mayfield Hucherson; his son, Scott Townsend and his wife April; two grandchildren, Garrett Markham and Mary Ashleigh, and sister, Lee (Keith) Pettle.
Friends are cordially invited to the visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Thursday, the 25th of May, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
The funeral service will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Friday, the 26th of May, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.
The family will then gather for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Ken Hucherson’s name be directed to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, P.O. Box 20070, Houston, TX 77225; or to Friends for Wishes, P.O. Box 1926, Cypress, Texas 77410. Direct access to their respective donation pages is available below under "Donations."
Your support and contributions will enable us as a 501c3 to meet our goals and fund our mission.
These volunteers have dedicated their hearts and soul to ensuring that kids with critical illnesses get their Wishes! Friends for Wishes is one of the best charities to donate to!
Friends for Wishes (FFW) is an organization that supports the efforts of Make-A-Wish® to help children with critical illnesses find hope, strength, and joy through the power of a Wish.
Friends for Wishes has been a dream of Norman Walker's for a long time. Norman has always wanted to raise money to help children, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation is close to his heart. He got his wish!
FFW started with a BBQ Cook-off in 2014. In 2022, the "Fishing for Wishes" Team Tournament in Fulton, Texas was started, and in 2023, the "Golfing for Wishes" Tournament will be added. We have given over $1,000,000 to Wish Kids at Make-A-Wish and have sponsored over 70 wishes. All the money Friends for Wishes raises goes to Make-A-Wish. We aim to grant as many wishes as possible to children with critical illnesses at Make-A-Wish and put a smile on their faces! We are transforming little lives one wish at a time!
